The crested crane

The crested crane, more accurately called the Grey crowned crane, is a large, elegant bird native to eastern and southern Africa. It is especially famous for its striking golden crown of stiff feathers.

• Wingspan: Around 2 meters (6.5 feet)
• Weight: 3–4 kg (6.6–8.8 lb)
• Diet: Seeds, insects, frogs, lizards, and small mammals

One unique feature of the grey crowned crane is that it can perch in trees, thanks to its long hind toe—something most other crane species cannot do.

The bird is also the national bird of Uganda and appears on the country’s national flag and coat of arms.

Unfortunately, the grey crowned crane is classified as Endangered due to habitat loss, illegal capture for the pet trade, and disturbance of nesting sites.
