History & Conservation
-
Set up initially as a white rhino sanctuary. It was formally declared a game reserve in 1965.
-
White rhinos (Northern White Rhino, etc.) were once residents; however, by the late 1970s/80s they were extirpated (locally wiped out) due to poaching and conflict.
-
Recently, there are plans underway for reintroduction of southern white rhinos. Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is preparing infrastructure (fencing, patrols, habitat modifications) and translocating various herbivores to improve the ecological balance before rhinos are brought back.
Wildlife
Some species you can expect to see include:
-
Mammals: Uganda kob, waterbuck, bushbuck, hartebeest, hippos (along the Nile), black & white colobus monkeys, baboons.
-
Birdlife: Good bird‑watching especially around swamp edges, trees near water. Species like African fish eagles, grey crowned cranes, marabou storks have been recorded.
Recent Developments
-
Translocation of animals: In 2024, UWA moved 226 Uganda kobs and 50 buffalos from Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve and Murchison Falls area into Ajai to bolster wildlife numbers and prime the area for rhino introduction.
-
Reintroduction of rhinos: Preparations are active for bringing in white rhinos from places like Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.
Visiting Ajai — What to Know
-
Best time to visit: Dry seasons are better (when the floodplains and roads are more accessible). During rainy seasons, swamps flood, roads may become hard
-
Access: From Arua, there is a route via a dirt road (for part) after a surfaced road to Olevu; road conditions vary.
-
Accommodation: There is currently no permanent lodge/campsite inside the reserve; visitors typically stay in nearby towns such as Arua.
We can suggest an itinerary, or where to stay nearest to Ajai if you have become intrested in adventuring this beauty of a game resserve
