Mountains of the Moon

The Mountains of the Moon is the poetic name for the Rwenzori Mountains, a dramatic mountain range on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). These mountains are among the most awe-inspiring and mysterious in all of Africa, both in legend and reality.

Why Are They Called the Mountains of the Moon?

The name “Mountains of the Moon” dates back to ancient times. Greek geographer Ptolemy (around 150 AD) referred to a snowy mountain range deep in Africa as the source of the Nile River, calling them the “Lunae Montes” or Mountains of the Moon. For centuries, this was considered a myth—until European explorers “rediscovered” the Rwenzoris in the late 19th century.

Key Facts about the Rwenzori Mountains

  • Location: Western Uganda, along the border with the DRC.
  • Highest Peak: Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley — 5,109 meters (16,762 ft), making it the third-highest mountain in Africa (after Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya).
  • National Park: Rwenzori Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (recognized for its natural beauty and biodiversity).

What Makes the Rwenzori Mountains Unique?

  1. Snow in the Tropics
    • Despite being near the Equator, the highest peaks are snow-capped year-round, due to their elevation. Glaciers sit atop rugged cliffs and alpine valleys.
  2. Incredible Biodiversity
    • The Rwenzoris are one of the most biologically diverse ranges in Africa.
    • Different vegetation zones: tropical rainforest, bamboo, heather, and alpine moorland with giant lobelias and groundsels.
    • Home to rare species like the Rwenzori turaco, forest elephants, and even chimpanzees.
  3. Unspoiled Wilderness
    • The trails are remote and less traveled compared to Kilimanjaro or Mount Kenya, offering a true off-the-beaten-path adventure.
    • Multi-day treks (7–9 days) lead to the peaks, through mud, mossy forests, and glacier fields.
  4. Cultural Significance
    • The mountains are sacred to the local Bakonjo and Amba peoples, who live in the foothills.
    • Many local legends surround the peaks and rivers.

 Trekking the Rwenzoris

  • Hardcore Adventure: The Rwenzoris are more challenging than Kilimanjaro, often muddy and technical, ideal for experienced trekkers.
  • Guided Expeditions available through organizations like Rwenzori Trekking Services (RTS) or Rwenzori Mountaineering Services (RMS).
  • Best time to visit: December–February or June–August (drier seasons).

In Short: The Mountains of the Moon Are…

  • Mysterious
  • Majestic
  • Unforgettable

They are one of the crown jewels of Uganda’s natural beauty, combining legend, geography, and raw wilderness in a way few places on Earth do.
