NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA

Embarking on the NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA (NCA), is one way to participate and share the most outstanding tourism experiences of your lifetime. NCA is a world-Class tourist destination with wildlife co-existing with semi-nomadic, Maasai Pastoralists practicing traditional livestock grazing.

Due to outstanding natural universal values, it was Tanzania’s first site, on the world Heritage list in 1979. In 2010 USECO inscribed NCA as a mixed property on the world Heritage list. Internationally, NCA is also recognized as a part of Serengeti- Ngorongoro Biosphere Reserve under UNESCO’S man and the Biosphere program since 1981. NCA is the most successful multiple used managed area by IUCN protected area category VI in the world, where indigenous people are so far, living harmoniously and peacefully with wildlife.

NCA is known for: –

-The spectacular Ngorongoro Crater by 250sq km, which is the world’s largest unbroken caldera in the Eastern Great Rift Valley.

– Largest population of wild ungulates in the Crater, including the only visible population of Black Rhinoceros in their natural environment.

-Densest known population of lions.

BIF FIVE (Elephant, Rhino, Lion, Leopard and Buffalo) seen in their natural environment, within a span of four-hour drive inside Ngorongoro Crater.

-The Empakai Crater, a pristine paradise Caldera,

-Soda lake with over 61M depth that is unusual depth for an alkaline lake in and around East Africa.

-Various wildlife species and Flamingos

-Only active volcano in Tanzania

-The Oldonyo Lengai

-Oldupai Gorge-one of the most world- renowned palaeontological and archaeological site, with foot prints trail of almost 27 meters long.

HOW TO GET THERE:

NCA can be accessed by Road or Air (Kilimanjaro/ Arusha).

By road from Kilimanjaro to Arusha 55km

From Arusha to Ngorongoro Conservation Area- 160km favoured by 4×4 vehicles.

WHERE TO STAY:

  • NCA has a public campsite called SIMBA A, west of the Crater rim with toilets, hot water/ showers, Kitchen and dinning hall facilities. You come with your own tents, food supplies and cooking utensils.
  • Special Campsites do exist.
  • There are a number of tented campsites like lake Masek, Lake Ndutu Luxury Canal, Oldupai camp, and Ngorongoro wild camp.
  • There are well established lodges that offer high end services like:- Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge, Ngorongoro Serena Hotel and Ngorongoro Crater Lodge( on the South Wester Rim)
  • On the Eastern Rim there is: – Sopa lodge, while Ndutu safari lodge is in Ndutu area. Rhino Lodge is on the Southern part of the Crater Rim)
  • There are other lodges situated in Kanatu Area, outside the NCA. They include: – Gibbs farm, Kifaru Lodge, Ngorongoro farm House, Bashay Rift Lodge, High view Hotel, Kudu Lodge to mention but a few.
