LAKE BUNYONYI IN UGANDA

 

Bunyonyi locally means many little birds so this explains why the lake is called Lake Bunyonyi because it’s a habitation of many birds . Lake Bunyonyi is located in the south western part of Uganda between Kisoro and Kabale districts bordering Rwanda. Lake Bunyonyi is the second deepest lake in Africa and it was formed as a result of volcanic eruption. Lake Bunyonyi is known for its cozy cool quite breeze and scenic view with the 29 islands. Many tourists come to see and witness the amazingly breath-taking beauty of the gorgeous and unique islands. It has 5 main islands each with an interesting story behind its history.

These include;

  1. Akampane(punishment) island, the area where girls who got pregnant were abandoned by their family members.
  2. Bwama island the largest island with the leprosy treatment sanctuary, schools and human settlement.
  3. Bacuranuka Island, this one is believed to be the cursed island that turned upside down.
  4. Kyahugye Island is a home of wild life animals like impalas, antelopes and waterbucks.
  5. Bushara island is a home of most bird species on the lake.
