Overview
Lake Bunyonyi is a stunning, high-altitude lake nestled in the Kigezi Highlands in southwestern Uganda, near the border with Rwanda.Lake Bunyonyi is renowned for its picturesque landscape. The lake is surrounded by lush, terraced hills and scattered with numerous islands, each with its own unique character. The tranquil waters and the panoramic views from the surrounding hills create a serene and breathtaking environment and it is situated at an elevation of about 1,962 meters (6,439 feet) above sea level. It spans approximately 60 square kilometers (23 square miles) and is one of Uganda’s deepest lakes, with depths reaching up to 44 meters (144 feet).
The area around Lake Bunyonyi is rich in biodiversity. The lake and its surrounding wetlands support a variety of bird species, making it a popular spot for bird watching. The lush vegetation around the lake adds to its beauty and supports a diverse range of plant life.The beautiful lake is dotted with around 29 islands, some of which are home to local communities like the Bakiga and Bafumbira. Notable islands include Akampene (Punishment) Island, which was historically used to isolate women who were considered to have committed offenses.
Due to its high altitude, Lake Bunyonyi enjoys a moderate climate with cooler temperatures compared to other parts of Uganda. This makes it a pleasant destination year-round. The calm, deep waters are considered safe for swimming and surrounding hills provide excellent hiking opportunities with stunning views.Lake Bunyonyi is indeed praised for its tranquility, natural beauty, and the warm hospitality of its local communities. Tour Plan
Our Guide will pick you up in Kampala and brief you about the safari and then you will start the 7-hour Journey to Lake Bunyonyi while making several stoppages along the highway. Southwestern Uganda has arguably the best scenery in Uganda. You will marvel at the beautiful countryside and vast swamps. Prepare to catch sight of the local people tending their gardens and looking after their long-horned Ankole cattle .There will be a stop at the equator crossing in Kayabwe for photos, refreshments and an opportunity to buy local souvenir. The Equator crossing allows you to put one foot on the earths southern and another on the northern hemisphere. Lunch will be in Mbarara town before proceeding to Kabale populary known as “the Switzerland of Uganda” and finally to Lake Bunyonyi one of the deepest lakes in the world. After check-in at the hotel and enjoy the evening at leisure.

On the second day of the safari you will have an early breakfast and head to Abaheesi and Batwa communities for a cultural visit , while in these communities you will interact with the local people through which you will learn more about the communities history and stories and after which you will go for zip lining and later drive back to your lodge for lunch and in the afternoon you will drive to lake Bunyonyi for a boat/canoe cruise . "Bunyonyi" actually means "the place of many little birds" that makes the area a paradise for bird watchers in the region.Take a canoe ride on Lake Bunyonyi which holds 348 species of birds of which 90 percent are Albertine Rift Endemic species - an experienced bird watcher can identify up to 100 species in a day. A visit to different Islands reveals to you the different activities and after retire for the evening at the lodge.

This will be the last day of the 3 days lake Bunyonyi tour. You will have a relaxed breakfast while with the view of the mist rising off the lake while listening to sweet sounds of birds, check out of the lodge and transfer back to Kampala. On the way, you will have a lunch en-route in Mbarara town where after you will proceed to Kampala.
