SHOEBILL
The shoebill is a large bird native to the swamps and wetlands of central and eastern Africa. Known for its striking appearance, it has a massive, shoe-shaped bill that gives it its name. These birds are primarily grey in color, with long legs and a robust body. Shoebills are also known for their unique hunting style, often stalking their prey—such as fish and frogs—very slowly before striking with precision. They can be quite solitary and are known for their eerie, almost prehistoric presence. Have you seen one or are you interested in a specific aspect of the shoebill?
In Uganda, the shoebill can be found primarily in the wetlands of the Murchison Falls National Park and the surrounding swamps, especially in areas like the Nile River delta. These habitats provide the ideal conditions for them to hunt for fish, frogs, and other small aquatic animals.
Uganda is one of the best places to observe shoebills in the wild, thanks to its rich biodiversity and conservation efforts. Birdwatchers often seek them out due to their rarity and distinctive appearance. Guided boat tours through the wetlands can increase the chances of spotting these magnificent birds. Have you been to Uganda, or are you planning a trip there?
