Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC)

Uganda’s most well-known zoo is the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC), commonly called the Entebbe Zoo. Here’s everything you need to know;

  • Located on the shores of Lake Victoria in Entebbe, just about 10 minutes from Entebbe International Airport and ~40 minutes from Kampala
  • Opened in 1952 originally as a reception/outpatient center for injured and orphaned wildlife; evolved into a zoo in the 1960s and rebranded in 1994 with a conservation-education mission
  • Home to 100+ species: lions, giraffes, chimpanzees, rhinos, elephants, crocodiles, hyenas, leopards, plus reptiles and birds like shoebills .
  • Breeding programs target endangered species like the Rothschild giraffe and Uganda kob
  • Also acts as a rescue, rehabilitation, and release center, treating over 500 animals and caring for ~250 currently .

Opening hours: 8 am–6 pm; arrival before 4 pm recommended for best experience
